When to Take Maternity Photos
If you’re expecting and thinking about maternity photos, you may be wondering when to schedule them. You want your belly to show, but you also want to feel comfortable and enjoy the experience.
Around 28–34 weeks is a good starting point for planning your maternity session. Every pregnancy is different, though, and we can choose a date based on how you’re feeling and the portraits you have in mind.
What makes this a good time for maternity photos?
During this stage, your bump will often have a defined shape, and you still have some time before your due date. That gives us room to plan your session without leaving everything until the last few weeks.
There’s no perfect belly size for maternity portraits. The way we use wardrobe, light and posing can beautifully highlight your pregnancy at different stages. You don’t need to wait until your bump is as big as possible.
When should you book your session?
Reach out during your second trimester, even if you aren’t ready to take photos yet. Booking ahead gives us time to talk through your ideas, choose your wardrobe and plan whether your partner or children will join you. You don’t need to have everything figured out before you inquire. Your due date is enough to start the conversation. For my fine-art maternity sessions near Philadelphia, we’ll begin with a consultation so we can create a session that feels personal to you.
What if you’re already past 34 weeks?
Please still reach out! Being past the usual planning window doesn’t automatically mean you’ve missed your chance. We can discuss availability, how you’re feeling and what you’re comfortable doing. Your session can include simple poses, seated portraits and breaks whenever you need them. If your care team has given you any activity restrictions, let me know so we can keep those in mind while planning.
What if you’re expecting twins?
Let’s talk about timing early. The usual window may not be the best fit for you, and we can plan around your comfort and any guidance from your care team. You don’t need to wait until a certain week to get in touch.
Do you need to choose your outfits before booking?
You don’t! Please don’t feel like you need to buy a whole wardrobe before we talk. During your consultation, we’ll discuss the looks you love and the available studio wardrobe. We can also incorporate pieces you already own. A fitted dress, a simple bodysuit, soft draping or a favorite pair of jeans can each create a very different feel. Your portraits can be soft and romantic, clean and simple, or more dramatic. We’ll choose what feels right for you.
And if you’re worried about posing, I’ll guide you through that, too.
